Ultra-Early Pregnancy Test for Cattle

Cattle farming is growing rapidly in emerging countries, while in Europe, profit margins are stagnating or even declining, often falling into negative territory. Despite these differences, farmers everywhere need better herd management methods to ensure long-term profitability and efficient resource use.

The PreCowGest project aims to improve cattle breeding by developing innovative tools. It focuses on creating an early pregnancy and embryo loss test, as well as a predictive model to estimate the chances of successful insemination. These tools will help farmers get cows pregnant faster, reducing financial losses from failed reproduction.

This project will have several benefits. For the environment, it will make better use of natural resources and lower the carbon footprint of cattle farming. Economically, it will cut costs for farmers through more efficient herd management. Socially, it will improve working conditions and create jobs in Wallonia, supporting the local economy. Lastly, it will boost Wallonia’s reputation in agricultural biotechnology, leading to scientific publications and patents.
